An Excellent Safety Record
We understand that the possibility of environmental or social impact from any energy source is a concern. Natural gas has been proven safe to produce and transport for consumer, commercial and industrial uses, as well as electrical power generation.
The unique characteristics of natural gas contribute to its excellent safety record. It has a limited range of flammability; it will not burn if it has too much or too little oxygen or in the absence of a spark or ignition source. Additionally, all natural gas that is distributed to residential and commercial consumers has an odorant added to it called mercaptan that gives it a distinct smell. This smell makes it easy to identify if a natural gas leak has occurred.
